Many charters choose their tackle based on cost. What is the least expensive rod and reel combination that will be adequate in this fishery?

Blue Ribbon Alaskan Charters believes that tackle is a crucial component of an enjoyable fishing day. Halibut fishing is heavy work. Anyone who has spent a day bouncing heavy leads on the bottom, checking bait, and fighting fish is familiar with the sore muscles that result. Quality, flexible rods make the work much easier on arms and backs. The rod should fight the the fish. Stiff rods make the fisherman's arms, shoulders and back do all the work and absorb the shock. When a rod bends, it is absorbing shock so the fisherman's body does not have to. (From the owner: I have experienced the difference and want my clients to have the best tackle I can can reasonably supply.)

Reels are the second critical component in the tackle setup. Reel drags should be smooth. When that trophy sized halibut makes a run, the reel should not jerk and stick. Two speed reels, with a low gear for heavy retrieval (battling that big halibut) and a higher gear for quick bait checks, are very helpful when fishing. Once a fisherman experiences a good reel with a low gear for retrieval, they never want to go back to single speed reels.

We've taken the concept on reels a bit further. With the purchase of the Fantasia II we have added some high quality, heavy duty electric reels. These reels are incredible when fishing the deep water. They also allow people who would otherwise have a difficult time handling halibut tackle for several hours to enjoy there fishing experience. We don't use the electrics all the time, but when the conditions call for them they are great.

Blue Ribbon Alaskan Charters uses Diawa Centerline Rods and 2 Speed Penn Reels for halibut fishing. This combination is twice as expensive as the typical setup used on most charter boats. Greater comfort and ease of use makes the expense pay off in fisherman enjoyment.
